Overall Winner - The Auchmull Project, Gannochy Estate, Glen Esk
The Auchmull Project - an imaginative refurbishment of an old sporting lodge and its outbuildings in Glen Esk - has been judged overall winner of the Angus Design Awards 2008.
Auchmull lies at the heart of the Gannochy Estate in Glen Esk, which extends to 17,000 acres and was once considered to be one of Scotland's premier sporting estates.
The estate was acquired by Allan Hemmings in 2004, whose refurbishment of Auchmull is part of ongoing work to bring the Gannochy Estate back to its former glory.
The key parts of the refurbishment were the extension to the lodge house to create an extensive library and the conversion of the steading to provide self catering accommodation and self-contained accommodation for trainee gamekeepers.

Highly Commended - Milton Studio, Glamis
Architect's studio belongs to James F Stephen Architects and are purpose built offices, within the conservation area of Glamis. Work was completed in December 2006. The brief was to create an open plan office for an expanding workload and staff which would also provide state of the art IT facilities and welfare facilities for staff. It was also to allow for future expansion, and was split over two levels. A key decision was also taken to use local companies for the construction works.
Designed by the practice's founding partner, Fred Stephen, others in the practice were also highly involved with drawing work, project architect and interior design.

Commended - Logie Schoolhouse
The Scottish National Trust's Little Houses Improvement Scheme acquired the schoolhouse knowing that for such a humble building its significance was profound, both to the small village which it served as well as the wider community for what it can tell us about rural education and vernacular construction. A consensus was reached amongst several interested partners including Angus Council and Historic Scotland that the building must be saved and from the outset the Trust was committed to attempt to an exemplary conservation project in keeping with the importance of the building.
The overall approach taken to the conservation of Logie Schoolhouse was to conserve as found, with minimal intervention to achieve what was necessary to create a viable new use. Those alterations which were required were not intended to be boldly architectural in the traditional sense; instead they were subtle and based on an intimate knowledge of the building and its materials. Anything new was to accommodate the old and existing building fabric to preserve a patina of age as no attempt would be made to tidy up appearances for their own sake. The project was also significant for highlighting the role which earth building has played in Angus' vernacular past and in fostering the craft skills necessary to work with this material in the future. As works on site progressed a series of workshops were offered to the public which explored local earth-building traditions and afforded participants the opportunity for hands on work with the material. Commended - The Harbour Visitor Centre
The building formed an integral part of the regeneration of Arbroath Harbour including formation of a new marina and environmental improvements in the area and is seen as a unique building on a high profile site
The project was a partnership of Angus Council, Scottish Enterprise Tayside, European Regional Development Fund and a local private business.
Client: Angus Council
Architect: Roy Clark, Baxter Clark and Paul
Main Contractor: W.H. Brown Construction (Dundee) Ltd
Commended - 62 Hill Street, Monifieth
The brief from the client was to "revitalise the house and maximise its magnificent views over the Tay Estuary".
The designer decided to make a definite split of old and new as opposed to repeating the original materials and form. A bold approach was taken to restore this Grade B listed building.

Main Contractor: Andrew Shepherd Construction Ltd, Forfar
Commended - Queen Mother Memorial Gates
The new Glamis Castle entrance commemorates the memory of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, at the entrance to her childhood home in Angus. The gateway provides a fitting entrance to the castle, alleviating the traffic congestion previously experienced at the old gates on the periphery of the village whilst at the same time connecting the castle with the village and establishing a sense of local community. The swept back line of the rebuilt policy wall enhances the entrance to the village where the gates have become the centrepiece and focus to daily life.
