Angus Design Awards

Winner 2002

Arbroath Abbey Visitor’s Centre
Arbroath

A unanimous view by the judging panel saw the Arbroath Abbey Visitor Centre named as the overall winner. This building also received recognition from the local chapter of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and the Royal Town Planning Institute in Scotland.

It is an example of how the built heritage can be used to assist the economic regeneration of an area. The design by Simpson & Brown Architects, Edinburgh shows modern architecture within a historic setting.

The construction of this building comprises features such as natural sandstone walls and a turf roof. It was completed by Clachan Construction of Pert.

The concept for the Visitor Centre was put forward by the Arbroath Partnership, which comprised Angus Council, Historic Scotland and Scottish Enterprise Tayside.

“Innovative design that fits with Abbey and adjacent buildings.” Graham McNicoll, Judge, 2002
