Angus Design Awards 2006 -
The Winners and Ceremony

The Awards Ceremony was held on Wednesday 24 January 2007 at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. Over 100 guests attended where a display of the submissions were on show and jazz and classical piano music provided the entertainment.

The Overall Winner for the Angus Design Awards 2006 was:

Parramatta, Hillside, Montrose

Parramatta, Hillside, Montrose

Trophies were awarded to the client, designer/architect and main contractor. The eco-friendly house was unanimously voted as the overall winner by the judging panel. The construction of the house using untreated Douglas Fir with soft wood panelling, the exterior clad in untreated larch and the use of hemp for insulation along with under-floor heating, solar panels and the most made out of natural sunlight all added to the merits of the house. Neil Sutherland Architects of Inverness designed the house and the main contractor was Steve Warren Construction. Both were there on the night to collect their awards along with the owners Mr and Mrs Paton.

Awards and Commendations

There were three categories of nomination as decided by the judges;

There were three commendations handed out and three awards, of which, one of the awards was classed as the overall winner. The other commendations and awards were;

Award for Extension Category – . Client – Angus Housing Association. Designer – Colin Smith and Judith Wilson Architects. Main Contractor – QAPM, Dundee.

Award for Adaptation/Conversion – Arbroath ACCESS Office. Client – Angus Council. Designer – Corporate Services, Property Service. Main Contractor – Pert Bruce Construction Ltd.

Commendation for New Build – Eco House, Wallace Street, Carnoustie. Owner – Mr and Mrs Johnston. Designer – Brunton Design Studio. Main Contractor – WJM Construction Ltd.

Commendation for Adaptation/Conversion – Signal Tower Museum, Arbroath. Client – Angus Council. Designer – Corporate Services, Property Service. Main Contractor – Smith & Webster, Carnoustie.

Commendation for Adaptation/Conversion – Kutz, High Street, Arbroath. Owner – Julie Gardner. Designer – Julie Gardner. Main Contractor – Alexander Oastler Ltd, Dundee.

Further music was enjoyed following the ceremony and many took the opportunity for a guided tour of Hospitalfield House. A DVD of the evening will be available for a minimal fee, of which all will be donated to a charity yet to be decided.
