Project Progress Update - 20 January 2010

Traditional Construction Skills Report

The attached report was commissioned by the City of Brechin Townscape Heritage Initiative with funding from Angus Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and LEADER with an in-kind support from Angus College.

The report details the results from a survey of 200 'relevant' construction companies, both building contractors and sole traders that are located within the LEADER Angus, Tayside and Perth & Kinross region. The objective of the study was to gather information on existing skills, identify any skills shortages and gaps and investigate the types of training and work undertaken in the local construction industry. Previous studies had been undertaken in Scotland, but the size and scope of the surveys had been insufficient to determine the extent of traditional building skills provision and training requirements.

The report highlights that there are some specific skills shortage in the local area but that many companies are committed to training and opportunities exist to further up skill new recruits and more experienced workers by offering specialist training events - possibly in the form of short courses, additional bolt on modules to existing qualifications or Masterclasses.

Towards the end of the report (pages 23 to 30) you will find that there is a directory giving contact details for some of the companies who responded to the survey who requested for their details to be included. Two case studies for projects undertaken by local contractors can be found on pages 18-22.

As a result of this survey Angus College intends to submit further applications for funding to develop bolt on courses and Masterclasses as well as up skill existing lecturers and develop programme material.
