Restenneth Priory

Angus Archives houses and preserves 800 years of the areas written, printed and photographic history. These include Burgh records for towns in Angus as well as Angus County Council and private records for the whole of Angus.

A fantastic collection of charters, letters, diaries, legal documents, photographs and much more that provide an insight into some of the history of Angus. Services offered include genealogy and research. More information about these services will be available on the date. Access is also available to the census, parish registers, valuation rolls, the IGI, research files and extensive local history and reference library.

The ancient Priory church at Restenneth is believed to have been founded by Nechtan, King of the Picts about 715 A.D. During the Wars of Independence the church at Restenneth was burned. Prince John the infant son of King Robert the Bruce was buried there.

Hunter Library/Restenneth Priory, by Forfar DD8 2SZ

On the Forfar – Montrose Road (B9113) about 1.5 miles from Forfar. Turn off this road at signpost to Restenneth Priory.
