UK Parliamentary Election

There is no set date for the UK Parliamentary Election and one can be called at any time. The election has now been called for Thursday 6 May 2010.

The election process starts with the Queen dissolving Parliament, usually on the advice of the Prime Minister. A legal writ will then be issued to the Returning Officer requiring the election to be run.

UK Parliamentary elections are run on UK parliamentary constituency boundaries and this means that for this election part of the Angus local government area falls within the Dundee East parliamentary constituency and Dundee West parliamentary constituency. If you are unsure of which constituency you will vote in at this election contact the Elections Hotline on 0845 2777778 for further information.

There are 646 parliamentary constituencies in the UK, 59 of which are in Scotland.

The Angus constituency will elect 1 MP (Member of Parliament) to sit in the House of Commons. They are elected using the traditional first past the post system with the candidate with the most votes becoming the MP for the constituency.
