Brechin Breviary

A fragment of a 13th Century Breviary (Cathedral songbook) containing material for celebrating the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, probably used in Brechin Cathedral and its Song School. It is written on parchment, in black and red ink.

The music was discovered in the binding of the Brechin Tailors’ Incorporation Book of 1660. A number of items previously in the Brechin Cathedral library have been discovered in bindings or used as notes by members of the Brechin Guildry.

The Breviary was on Brechin Museum for many years until 2004.

The breviary is item MS 782 in Angus Archives (oversize)
