Letter of Captain De Yonge

Letter Of Captain De Yonge Concerning A Wrecked Ship

Aefina sinking, newspaper cutting

The Dutch ship the "Aefina" sank in Carnoustie Bay in 1913 with the loss of all but one of her crew, Captain de Yonge. After a night clinging to the wreckage he was rescued by Boy Scout Leader Alexander Lamond. Later Captain de Yonge wrote to the "Mayor" of Carnoustie concerning the wreck of the "Aefina". He had been involved in a second wreck and had lost all his momentoes of his earlier ship. He wrote to Carnoustie to ask for assistance and to offer thanks to his rescuers.

By a strange coincidence during World War 2 Lamond was a Prisoner of War near de Yonge’s family in Holland. They kept him supplied with parcels of food and clothing throughout the war.
