You will get more out of your time at Angus Archives if you plan ahead before you visit. If you are researching your family history please come prepared with some basic data such as names, places and dates. See Getting Started for further advice. Please be aware that while the Angus Archives collection is extensive, some records are held in Edinburgh eg sheriff court records, church records including kirk session minutes, or in London eg military and emigration records.
Please give yourself plenty of time to conduct your research. It can take time to search, order and use your material. Take account of the extra time required to read old handwriting. You may want to look at the Scottish Archive Network online tutorials for documents 1500-1700 at www.scottishhandwriting.com
You can investigate Angus Archives holdings in the following ways:
- Visit the virtual search room where you will find lists of our major collections and some full catalogue listings, where indicated
- Visit the Scottish Archive Network at www.scan.org.uk to search their database of collection level descriptions which includes most of the Angus Archives collections
- Contact Angus Archives by email or telephone in advance to discuss your requirements (01307 468644 / angus.archives@angus.gov.uk)
- Look at the Angus libraries catalogues to search the book collection at www.library.angus.gov.uk
