Catalogues - Burgh Records
Angus Archives produces catalogues of the collections it holds for the Angus burgh records. These describe the items held, the names of some of the people concerned and indicate subject content. In many cases our catalogues describe collections down to item level, describing single pieces of paper
Royal Burghs were frequently new towns granted trading privileges by the king through a royal charter. These privileges included the sole rights to overseas trade within the burgh and in an designated around it. Royal burghs could also hold their own courts for lesser offenses and elect their own officials to a town council, led by a provost. They governed the burgh, setting bye laws for the governance of the burgh. In return the burgh paid taxes to the Crown. In addition to royal burghs, there were also burghs of barony and parliamentary burghs.
