Weights and Measures Collection

About this collection

photo of Forfar weights and measures

Both the town and the country were responsible to the Crown for keeping sets of weights and measures to ensure fair trading practice, and many of these standard measures from the Angus Burghs have remained within the care of the Angus Council. Present day changes in trading standards will dictate periodic up-dating of the collection.

What are the highlights of this collection

After the Act of Union in 1707, English measures were also circulated through the burghs and various versions and copies appeared until the Imperial System was introduced in 1824.

The highlights of this collection are the pre-union Scottish Pint measure issued by the Burgh of Stirling in 1618 (the equivalent of three Imperial pints), a set of Scotch measures copied from the City of Edinburgh in 1817, and a measure gauge belonging to the incorporation of Chapmen in Angus from 1758.
