Montrose Museum
Montrose Archaeology Collection
About this collection
The present landscape of Montrose and district has been formed by many generations of hunters, herdsmen, farmers and foresters. Traces of many of their houses, farms, religious sites or burial monuments survive and artefacts from this wealth of sites form a significant archaeology collection at Montrose Museum.
What are the highlights of this collection
The earliest evidence of human use of the area survives in the form of flint tools and stone axes used by the neolithic hunter gatherers. Such early tools feature in the collection along with later objects dating from the time when a new economy based on agriculture reached Britain around 4500 - 4000 BC.
The collection also features a collection of enigmatic carved stone balls and several fine examples of bronze age metalwork.
How can I find out more
Almost all of the collection is on display. More information on the archaeology collection can be obtained from museum staff.
