Arbroath Signal Tower Museum
Arbroath Costume Collection
About this collection
People in fishing communities wore a distinctive dress which evolved to suit their special working conditions. This costume became noticeably different from other townsfolk and although distinct did vary from place to place. The museum has a representative collection of this characteristic costume from Auchmithie and Arbroath.
What are the highlights of this collection
Auchmithie Wedding Dress and Hat. A fine example of a paisley patterned woollen dress and hat worn at fisher weddings in the 19th century. This particular dress was worn by a member of the Auchmithie fisher community for her wedding in 1879
Arbroath Fisher Costume. A good example of the decorative yet also very practical fisher costume worn by women at Arbroath and Auchmithie until well into the 20th century.
How can I find out more
Conservation reasons and lack of display space mean only a small selection of costume is on display. Further details can be made available on request.
