Arbroath Signal Tower Museum

Arbroath Model Boat Collection

About this collection

This collection of fishing vessel models reflects the huge changes that have been seen in the design of fishing boats from Arbroath through the 19th and 20th centuries and of the types of vessels that were built in Arbroath for the industry.

Each design differed for the type of fishing and the sea conditions where the vessel was to be used. From the 1800s the main types seen on the East Coast were of the ‘Scaffie’, ‘Fifie’ and ‘Zulu’ type, and then with the development of marine engines these sailing vessels in turn gave way to further developments in fishing boat design.

The museum displays a representative collection of painstakingly constructed scale models reflecting these changes in fishing boat design.
