Angus Fun in Athletics programme
Angus Council Sports Development Team has hosted 6 Fun in Athletics festivals across Angus during November 2011, as part of a National programme. The six winning teams from the North & South Angus Heats will now come together at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar on Wednesday 7th December 2011 to contest the Fun in Athletics - Angus Final 2011.

TESCO Bank Football Challenge
Children from six local primary schools across the Angus area had an amazing morning of football and fun at Tesco Bank Football Challenge Festivals on Thursday (27th October) at Forfar Farmington FC's Market Muir ground and at Brechin Leisure Centre on Friday (28th October) organised by Angus Council's Sports Development Team.

Coach Education courses
Angus Council's Sports Development Team is delighted to announce that five generic coach education courses have been organised to take place throughout October & November. The courses will allow coaches and club helpers to gain knowledge on child protection, first aid and disability sport which will be of benefit to their coaching ability.

Olympic Torchbearers Needed
The search is on for torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame during the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay taking place across the length and breadth of the country from 19 May - 27 July 2012. This is your chance to give someone you know their moment to shine and Angus Council are supporting the drive to get local people nominated.

Cashback Badminton Hits Angus
Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with BADMINTONscotland are offering boys and girls aged 11-16 years the opportunity to come along and play badminton for free as part of the national CashBack for Communities initiative.
CashBack for Communities is a programme of diversionary activities for young people to increase the opportunities they have to develop their interests and skills in an enjoyable, fulfilling and supported way, using funds recovered from criminals.
The badminton sessions are FREE with all coaching and equipment provided:

- When? - Friday 27 May - Friday 1 July 2011 - 7.00-8.30pm

JAWS Achieve National Recognition
JAWS Amateur Swimming Club of Forfar already hold the Angus Club Excellence Gold Award from Angus Council and have now also gained national recognition through achieving Scottish Swimming's quality accreditation 'swiMark'.

Great Britain Athletes come to Angus
Great Britain Special Olympic athletes descended on Angus recently.
Angus Council in partnership with Tayside Special Olympics and Angus Disability Sport welcomed the Special Olympic Great Britain World Games squads of Football 5s, Ten Pin Bowling and Swimming as well as playing host to the National Power lifting Competition.
Provost Ruth Leslie Melville opened the National Power lifting Competition on Saturday, where Lochside Leisure Centre saw 45 athletes power their way through the squat, bench and dead lift.

Bank of Scotland Midnight League in Montrose
Bank of Scotland's Midnight League programme got the thumbs up in Montrose on Friday 25 March, when young people from the area took part in 90 minutes of safe, organised football delivered by qualified Scottish FA coaches.
The initiative, run in partnership with the Scottish FA, Angus Council sports development team, local police, and the Scottish Government's Cashback for Communities programme, takes place weekly between 8.30pm and 10pm on Friday evenings.
Bank of Scotland recently pledged another three years of support for Midnight Leagues taking their involvement in the programme to over a decade.

Hockey Nights - Cashback programme
Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with Scottish Hockey, Monarchs Hockey Club, Brechin Thistle Ladies Hockey Club and the Café Project in Arbroath are providing children aged 10-19 years with the chance to take part in a new CashBack for Communities initiative called Hockey Nights at Arbroath Sports Centre.
CashBack for Communities is a programme of diversionary activities for young people to increase the opportunities they have to develop their interests and skills in an enjoyable, fulfilling and supported way.
The Hockey Nights initiative will take the format of small games, with a basic introduction to the skills of hockey and will be delivered by qualified Scottish Hockey coaches. All hockey equipment will be provided for these sessions and they are free of charge to attend.
Assistant Sports Development Officer Scott Anderson said "We feel this is an ideal opportunity to bring new children to a sport they may never have had any contact with in the past. We hope that this diversionary activity turns into a developmental activity with the youngsters who attend the Hockey night sessions accessing a local club set up such as Monarchs Hockey Club or Brechin Thistle Ladies for continued participation in the sport."
The Hockey Nights sessions will take place at Arbroath Sports Centre and will run for 10 weeks every Friday 7.15pm-8.45pm from 11th March 2011 - 13th May 2011.

Angus Primary Basketball Final
As part of the 2011 Angus Primary School Festival programme, a series of basketball festivals have now taken place across the county. The events were organised by Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with Active Schools and BasketballScotland.
4 cluster events have taken place in Arbroath, Carnoustie, Forfar and Kirriemuir with local Primary Schools entering mixed teams of pupils from P6/7.
Senior pupils from local Secondary Schools and Angus College have helped referee the matches and the festivals are run using Pasarrelle basketball rules, which ensure that all pupils received equal court time.
Two schools from each cluster took part in the Angus Final which is took place at Lochside Leisure Centre in Forfar on Wednesday 9th March. These schools were:
- Inverbrothock PS
- Timmergreens PS
- Burnside PS
- Carlogie PS
- Langlands PS
- Whitehills PS
- Newtyle PS
- Southmuir PS
Langlands Primary School from Forfar won this event and are joined by Carlogie Primary School from Carnoustie in representing Angus against teams from Dundee, Perth & Kinross and Fife at the Tayside and Fife Final later this month.

Angus Sports Awards 2010 Winners
The sporting stars of Angus were in the spotlight for the 15th annual Angus Sports Awards ceremony last night (Tuesday 8 March 2011). The Angus Sports Awards 2010 ceremony took place at the Reid Hall, Forfar and again highlighted the sporting talent and achievement that exists in Angus.

Midnight Leagues
Angus Council in partnership with Bank of Scotland, Tayside Police, Local Youth Initiative Fund and the Scottish FA deliver a number of Midnight Leagues across Angus.
These sessions are free of charge and are aimed at S1-S6 pupils who want to play 5-a-side football on a Friday evening with friends.

Angus Council - Scottish FA Developmental 4's
As part of Angus Council's commitment to developing the potential of football in the Angus area, the Angus Developmental 4's aimed at boys and girls aged 6-8 year olds will soon be recommencing. This will run in line with the "Desire to Play" stage in the Scottish FA Developing Talent Plan.
The Angus Developmental 4's start on Saturday 12 March 2011 and runs until Saturday 29 October 2011, with a three week break from 23 July - starting back on 13 August 2011.

Kirriemuir Basketball Festival
As part of the 2011 Angus Primary School Festival programme, a basketball festival for the Kirriemuir cluster took place at Webster's Sports Centre, Kirriemuir on Thursday 10th February from 4-6pm. The event was organised by Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with Active Schools and BasketballScotland.
Seven teams from the Kirriemuir cluster schools participated, entering mixed teams of pupils from P6/7. The festival was run using Pasarrelle basketball rules, which ensured that all pupils received equal court time. The matches were of a high standard with Southmuir PS & Newtyle PS coming out on top at the end of the festival and these two schools will now go forward to represent the cluster at the Angus Final, which is to take place on Wednesday 9 March at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar.

Angus Area Basketball Squad Trials 10/11
Angus Council Sports Development Team, in partnership with Tayside & Fife Sporting Partnership, has increased their Angus Area Basketball Development Squads this year to include both 'Landward' and 'Coastal' sections. There will be Under 12's and Under 15's squads that will have two sections training in either Arbroath or Forfar. Both squads will consist of boys' and girls' teams. All squads will be coached by qualified basketballscotland coaches.

Curling is a fantastic way to exercise, meet new people, and have fun.
Try Curling sessions welcome anyone aged 8 - 80+ and cater for all levels of abilities. RCCC qualified coaches will welcome you along, teach you the basics of the game and give you the opportunity to deliver curling stones full length and compare yourself to Eve Muirhead and David Murdoch!

The Sainsbury Monifieth Mile
On Sunday 21st March 2010 Angus Active Schools and Angus Sports Development teams will be working in partnership to host a Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile.
Monifieth High School is the setting for the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile. As well as offering you the opportunity to rise to the challenge and do the Mile, there will be raffles, food stalls and a host of other entertainment. So enter the Mile, get sponsored and make a real day of it!

Montrose Lawn Tennis Club People's Millions
Angus Council are delighted to congratulate Montrose Lawn Tennis Club on their success in the People's Millions final in November 2009!! The club have been awarded a grant of £34,500 to install floodlights at the club.
This once in a lifetime opportunity will enable Montrose Lawn Tennis Club to continue the club's development, offer an extended coaching programme and make the courts more available to members and the general public of all ages and abilities throughout Angus.
The club would like to thank everyone for their support and votes.
Scottish FA - New Class in Monifieth
The new class at Monifieth High School will be starting on 5th December 2009. This will run as a pilot scheme for 7 weeks.
There will be a mini kickers class running from 9:30 until 10:30 and a 5-7 and 8-12 Years old class running from 10:30-11:30.
Each session will cost £3.00 or free if you are a "bACTIVE" member. Places can be booked via Carnoustie Leisure Centre or booked on the day at Monifieth High School.

Run, Jump and Throw Athletics Club
Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with ScottishAthletics is providing children aged 6-12 years the chance to take part in a new Run, Jump and Throw Athletics Club at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar.
The Run, Jump and Throw Clubs initiative is a programme for children to gain an opportunity to participate in athletics activity all year round. A Run, Jump and Throw Club is aimed at children who have taken part in an introductory athletics programme at school, in a holiday programme, or in a local/school competition and would like more input and activity before joining an affiliated Athletics Club.

Sports development in Angus has been recognised as one of the best in the country.
An assessment score of 82% has seen Angus Council's sports development team become Highly Commended by Quest - the UK quality scheme for sport and leisure.
This score has seen the team improve on its last assessment by 7% and become the joint highest scoring sports development team utilising Quest in Scotland.

Angus Area Basketball Squad Trials 09/10
Angus Council Sports Development Team, in partnership with Sport Tayside & Fife, will be operating two Angus basketball development squads again this year. There will be an Under 12's squad and an Under 14's squad both of which will consist of boys' and girls' teams. All squads will be coached by qualified basketballscotland coaches.

On Tuesday 3rd March the SportTayside & Fife Giant Heptathlon Final took place at Pitreavie Athletics Centre in Dunfermline. The event brought together the top two schools from each of the four local authority events which have taken place over the last few months with each school fielding a team of seven girls and seven boys from S1 & 2.

Angus Inter-Club Competition
Angus Gymnastics Development Group held the annual Angus Inter-Club Gymnastics Competition on Sunday 7th December. The competition was held at Lochside Leisure Centre in Forfar. The event saw 65 gymnasts compete against the other clubs in the county.

Awards for Angus Football Clubs
The work of local football clubs supported by Angus Council sports development officers, has been recognised by the SFA.
Four Angus clubs were awarded the SFA Quality Mark at a ceremony in November.
The awards are the SFA club accreditation initiative designed to recognise safe and effective clubs.

Arbroath High School wins Giant Heptathlon
Angus Sports Development Team, in partnership with SportTayside & Fife, laid on a Giant Heptathlon for Angus secondary schools at Montrose Sports Centre on Monday 27 October 2008.
The day's events comprised coaching in the morning and competition in the afternoon. The pupils were coached through each event by coaches from Arbroath & District and Brechin High athletics clubs and sports development staff.
Also attending the event were Darren Ritchie and Piotr Haczek from Scottishathletics. They are the Scottish national event managers for jumps and combined events and sprints and hurdles respectively, and they attended the event for talent identification purposes.

Midnight Leagues
Angus Council is working in partnership with the Scottish Football Association and Youth Initiative Fund to continue the very successful Midnight League programme.
Midnight Leagues will start on Friday 24 October at the following venues:
- Montrose Football Club, Links Park - 8:30-10:00pm
- Brechin Leisure Centre - 9:00-10:30pm
- Saltire Leisure Centre, Arbroath - 9:00-10:30pm
- Webster's Sports Centre, Kirriemuir - 9:00-10:30pm
The sessions are FREE OF CHARGE and for boys and girls from S1-S6.

Multi Sports Event At Lochside Leisure Centre
Sixty three children with additional support needs had a taste of different sports at an event on Wednesday 1 October at Lochside Leisure Centre, Forfar.
The Multi Sport Primary School Festival was delivered through a partnership involving Angus Council's sports development team and active schools co-ordinators.
The aim of the festival was to introduce primary school children to multi sports in a fun, team based environment. The children took part in New Age Kurling, adapted from the original game of curling so that it can be played indoors on any hard flat surface; Boccia, a game similar to bowling which is specifically for athletes with a disability; and athletics.
Stix Hockey Hits Brechin

Primary school pupils from Brechin enjoyed a fun-filled hockey event recently.
The STIX hockey festival for primary 6/7 pupils from took place at Brechin public park, with Andover, Maisondieu, Stracathro, Lethnot, Tarfside and Edzell schools taking part.
The event which was organised by Angus Council sports development team and Angus active schools gave around 75 pupils the chance to take part in an introduction to the game of hockey through small-sided games.
Further STIX hockey festivals will take place in the coming weeks with the aim of bringing all the Angus teams together for an Angus training event before the SportTayside and Fife hockey finals in May 2009.
Stix Hockey Hits Arbroath

Primary school pupils from Arbroath enjoyed a fun-filled hockey event recently.
The STIX hockey festival for primary 6/7 pupils from Warddykes, Inverkeillor and Muirfield took place on Monday 15 September, and was organised by Angus Council sports development team and Angus active schools.
The festival gave around 40 pupils the chance to take part in an introduction to the game of hockey through passing, dribbling and shooting practice followed by small-sided games for the final part of the event. The rain stayed away and the participants enjoyed their morning of hockey and the chance to put into games what they had learnt in their practice drills.
The children were coached by senior pupils from Arbroath High School who then umpired the small-sided games.
Further STIX hockey festivals will take place in Brechin and Forfar in the coming weeks with the aim of bringing all the Angus teams together for an Angus training event before the SportTayside and Fife hockey finals in May 2009.
Tri-Golf Fun In Arbroath

Budding golfers from Arbroath enjoyed teeing off at a taster event at the Saltire Leisure Centre recently.
The tri-golf festival involved primary 4/5 children from Friockheim and Warddykes, with around 70 boys and girls taking part in a series of golf based fun drills and games.
Representatives from Letham Grange Golf Club were also on hand to pass on their golfing knowledge to the children and Morrison's Supermarket in Arbroath provided fruit and water to all of the children who took part in the festival.
Tri-Golf demonstrates how golf can be delivered through fun-based activity sessions involving large groups of youngsters. Tri-Golf is a national programme that is being delivered locally through a partnership involving Angus Council sports development team, Education, active schools, SportTayside and Fife and local golf professionals.
The festival was all about participation and fun, with the groups moving around and trying all the different aspects of the game of golf such as chipping, putting, driving and teamwork. Helping the children were senior pupils from Arbroath Academy who are completing their Junior Sports Leader Award. The senior pupils explained the activity along with providing coaching and guidance.
A further festival, taking in the other primary schools in the Arbroath Academy cluster is taking place later this month. The morning of fun colourful golf proved successful which children leaving with beaming smiles after going from tee to green.
Child Protection Courses
Local people involved in running sports clubs or activities in Angus are being invited to attend child protection courses being held in October and November.
The events, which have been organised by Angus Council's sports development team, are:

Active Angus 2008
Summer Sports and Activities Launch
Throughout Angus this summer, children will have the opportunity to take part in a number of different sports and activities through Angus Council Sports & Countryside Service’s Active Angus 2008 - Summer Sports and Activities. This programme starts on Monday 30th June and runs until Friday 15th August.
Please book at your local leisure facility to come along and join in the summer fun!!

Flying the Flag - London 2012
Take part in a free athletics, football or basketball session to celebrate the hand over of the Olympic flag from Beijing 2008 to London 2012.
Saltire Leisure Centre, Sunday 24 August 2008. Sessions 2.30-4.00pm. Flag ceremony 4.00pm.
