Bin Lorries Take Message Out Across Angus

As part of a campaign to tackle domestic abuse in Angus, the message on how to find help is being taken out across the county.

A publicity campaign has been launched with the domestic abuse helpline number being advertised on council bin lorries.

As these vehicles travel to some of the remotest parts of the county, this will ensure that those in rural areas have access to this vital information.

Councillor Frank Ellis whose ward covers rural parts of Angus has supported the campaign.

Councillor Ellis said: “Domestic abuse is not limited by geography, it is as likely to occur in rural areas as it is in towns.

“However those in remote areas can sometimes feel isolated and find it more difficult to seek help. I hope that by publicising the helpline number in this way, any women suffering domestic abuse will have the information they need to take the first steps to seeking help.”

Cathie Burton, public health practitioner NHS Tayside, said: “Wherever they live, victims of domestic abuse do not have to suffer in silence. There are services available to women in rural areas, and information and advice on how to access them are available by calling this number.”

This initiative is one of a number being supported by the Angus Partnership on Domestic Abuse, which included last month’s White Ribbon Campaign.

As part of the campaign which ran for two weeks from 25 November, Angus men were urged to don a white ribbon as a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.

The domestic abuse helpline number is 0800 027 1234.
