A Victorian Christmas At Brechin Town House Museum

Brechin Town House Museum is holding a display of Victorian memorabilia to show how the Victorians enjoyed and celebrated the festive season.

The celebration of Christmas really took off in the 19th Century and it was with the Victorians that Christmas began to develop into the many-faceted feast it is today.

The museum is also holding a crafty Cracking Christmas for all primary school children to go along and make their very own Christmas crackers, stocking and decorations.

The event takes place on Saturday 23 December between 2 and 4pm. So if you would like to invent a joke or motto for your cracker or hang up your own Santa Sock, or make your very own Victorian garland, come along to the museum and enjoy an afternoon of crafty surprises!

Places will be limited - so to book for this activity, please call in at Brechin Town House Museum, 28 High Street, or telephone (01356) 625536.

The museum has also been fortunate to obtain a loan from the National Museum of Scotland of the seal of King John Balliol.

It is a 19th century copy of the Great Seal of Scotland as used by this unfortunate Scottish King, who became famously known as the ‘Toom Tabard’.

This loan, which returns to the National Museum on 15 January, forms part of a Sword and Seal display which tells the story of the Scottish Wars of Independence and how these wars affected the history of Brechin and Angus.
