Christmas Message From Angus Provost Bill Middleton
As 2006 draws to a close it is a pleasure not only to look back on another eventful and positive year for Angus, but also to look forward to 2007 and the county stepping into the international spotlight.
Already preparations are underway for the Open Golf Championships at the Carnoustie Links course, which will bring thousands of visitors to the county.
Who can forget the drama of the last Open in Carnoustie in 1999, when Paul Lawrie triumphed in a dramatic finish - let’s hope that next year’s event proves to be just as enthralling.
I am sure that Angus people will pull out all the stops to provide visitors to the county a typically warm Angus welcome, and encourage them to ‘haste ye back’.
While a massive event such as the Open is bound to take centre stage, throughout Angus work goes on to ensure that the quality of life of our residents continues to be among the best in the country.
New purpose-built schools in Forfar and Carnoustie are beginning to take shape - a massive investment in future generations of Angus pupils - and work also continues apace to transform the Webster Theatre into a wonderful cultural asset for the whole county.
As I look back over the year, one of my personal highlights of 2006 was the granting of the Freedom of Angus to the Black Watch.
I know that all those connected to this famous Battalion appreciated the warm reception they received from Angus people at the colourful and memorable ceremony in Forfar.
Like 45 Commando before them, the granting of the Freedom of the county to the Black Watch, recognised the historic links between Angus and these servicemen and women, and demonstrated our great affection and respect for them.
As the festive season approaches our thoughts are with those within the armed services who will not be with their families this Christmas as they play their part in preserving peace and freedom around the world.
It only remains for me to wish my fellow citizens of Angus a merry Christmas and a prosperous, happy and healthy 2007 and I look forward to working with you and yours as what looks set to be an exciting year for Angus unfolds.
