Council Presses For New Alcohol-free Zone Legislation

Members of Angus Council are seeking an early response from the Procurator Fiscal to speed up the drafting of byelaws for Kirriemuir and Arbroath to curb drinking in public places.

The Fiscal’s office was first contacted in March this year requesting their comments on the draft legislation, then again in September asking for progress.

Following a meeting of the corporate services committee last Thursday, the council will again write to the Procurator Fiscal’s office asking for their comments on the byelaws.

Corporate Services convener Mark Salmond said: “We are very keen to see the introduction as soon as possible of these new byelaws banning town centre drinking in Arbroath and Kirriemuir and hope that these will be in place soon, without further delay.”

An update on progress will be reported to the next meeting of the corporate services committee on 31 January.
