Competition Highlights Awareness of HIV and AIDS

Focus on Alcohol Angus project has presented their World AIDS Day competition winner Greg Petherick, a pupil of Webster's High, Kirriemuir, with £50.00 of vouchers for JJB Sports.

The competition, which aimed to highlight awareness about HIV and AIDS, was widely circulated around Angus Council employees and to all of the secondary schools in Angus. Despite competing against adults, Greg was the winner who correctly answered ten questions.

In particular, the competition was designed to raise awareness that people who drink alcohol excessively take more risks sexually exposing them to the increased chance of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

A spokesperson for Focus on Alcohol Angus said: "The number of people diagnosed HIV positive continues to rise in Scotland and it is important that we continue to raise awareness of the risks. This competition has been an excellent way of highlighting the link between drinking too much and the very serious consequences that can occur. It was great that so many people participated and that many of the correct submissions came from young people."

Greg commented "After hearing a presentation from pupils at Webster's High about HIV and AIDS I entered the competition. I must have remembered more than I thought and am very happy to have won!"
