Angus Publicans Aim To Be Best Bar None

The results of a campaign to find the best run licensed premises in Angus will be revealed soon.

Judges will meet next week (7 January) to determine the winners of the Best Bar None awards, with the successful premises announced at an awards ceremony on 18 January.

The judging comes after months of work by the partners of Angus Drug and Alcohol Team. Premises completed application forms and were then assessed by teams from Tayside Police and Tayside Fire and Rescue Service.

This looked at how licensed premises dealt with issues like the prevention of crime and disorder, promoting public safety, preventing of public nuisance and protecting children from harm.

Based on the assessment, the judges will cast their vote for an overall winner and silver awards. All the premises which meet the Best Bar None standards will be awarded a bronze award and will have a plaque to display in their premises.

The judging panel consists of Robert Peat, chair, Angus Drug and Alcohol Action Team, Councillor Jim Millar, chair of Angus Licensing Board and Stewart Edgar, community safety manager, Tayside Fire and Rescue.

Robert Peat said: “Best Bar None has been one of Angus DAAT’s main contributions to the work of Focus on Alcohol Angus. Through Focus on Alcohol, we recognise that promoting responsible drinking and reducing alcohol related harm can only be achieved by working in partnership. This award scheme helps us to recognise and reward well run licensed premises. It also is one of the ways in which the licensed trade can become part of our partnership. Another benefit is that it helps us all to recognise well run premises and visit them with confidence.”

The Best Bar None scheme is part of the Focus on Alcohol Angus initiative which aims to co-ordinate and develop new projects and services across Angus to tackle alcohol misuse.

Key benefits for businesses participating in the Best Bar None scheme include the chance to share good practice with other licensees, opportunities for promotion, publicity and marketing and assistance in preparing for the new Licensing Act.
