Youth Charter Launched
A charter setting out young people’s aspirations for Angus has been launched.
The Angus Youth Charter has been developed by young people in the county themselves, with support from the council’s community learning and development service.
A series of workshops were held with members of the Angus Youth Congress and local youth councils in which young people were asked to consider what they would like Angus to be like, what other people could do to help this vision and what they themselves need to contribute. In addition to youth congress and council members, 50 other young people in the county were also asked for their views.
The charter describes the things that young people think will help them to enjoy their youth and grow up to be active, responsible, adults who make a positive difference to life at home, in school or college, at work and in the community. It also identifies actions that can be taken to help make Angus the kind of place that young people want to live in.
Joining young people from across the county to launch the charter on Wednesday 25 June, Education convener Peter Nield said: “Young people in Angus are valued members of our community and as the citizens of today and tomorrow they should enjoy growing up in Angus and be assisted to reach their full potential.
“By documenting their wishes and aspirations, and how service providers, communities and individual adults can help them realise these, the charter will help young people to enjoy their youth and grow up to be active, responsible, adults. It also identifies actions that can be taken to help make Angus the kind of place that young people want to live in.
“In return, charter outlines the responsibility of young people themselves as members of their communities.”
The charter will be distributed to every pupil in each secondary school and copies will also be sent to voluntary youth organisations throughout Angus. For additional copies contact Jennifer Miller, senior community learning and development worker, on 01307 468859.
