Chief Executive of Angus Council Announces His Retirement
David Sawers, Chief Executive of Angus Council is to retire in February 2011, aged 60.
He says: "I have been privileged to serve Angus for more than 30 years. In particular, I have been with Angus Council for the last 15 years, ten in the capacity of director of finance and for more than five years as chief executive.
He added: "I have been very fortunate in my career to have worked with so many capable people within the council and I am sure that these people will ensure the council will continue to go from strength to strength."
Leader of the council Bob Myles said: "David has been a highly respected chief executive, very committed to his job and keeping Angus to the forefront as one of the top performing councils in Scotland. It will be difficult to find someone with the same level of experience and expertise to deal with the undoubted challenging financial times ahead."
Provost Ruth Leslie Melville added: "We have been very lucky to have had David Sawers as our chief executive and his support and guidance has been invaluable. He has been helpful and encouraging to me as Provost, and indeed to all the members of the council."
David Sawers was educated at Harris Academy in Dundee and Dundee College of Commerce. Following a spell in the private sector, he took up employment in local government in 1974, starting his public sector career with the then Aberdeen Corporation.
He joined Angus District Council in 1980 as assistant director of finance before becoming director in 1992. He was Angus Council's first director of finance, being appointed in 1995 and became chief executive in 2005.
