Monifieth High Consultation Proposals

Angus Council is proposing to undertake a consultation exercise on changes to the delineated area of Monifieth High School.

The proposals are in response to the rising roll at the school and to prevent any future overcrowding.

A report to be considered by the authority's Education Committee on Tuesday 20 November, proposes that pupils from outwith Angus attending Barnhill Primary School should - in future - no longer have the automatic right to attend Monifieth.

However to ensure that no child currently attending Barnhill is disadvantaged, the report recommends that the necessary changes to the delineated area do not take place until 1 January 2009 (ie until the children currently in the primary department of Barnhill have finished their primary schooling).

Education Convener Brian Milne commented: "The rapid spread of new housing developments in Monifieth has resulted in a rising roll at the high school, and it is anticipated that this trend will continue.

"Although serious overcrowding is not yet being experienced, a continuing increase in the roll will put the school's ability to cope under some strain, and it is the responsibility of this authority to take whatever steps and necessary to secure the best possible educational environment for its pupils.

"It is therefore proposed that in future pupils who attend Barnhill Primary School, and who live in Barnhill (but outside Angus), should no longer have an automatic right to a place at Monifieth High School.

"However, the council does propose to keep faith with those parents who enrolled their children in Barnhill in the expectation of a transfer to Monifieth High School, and it is being proposed that this change should not take effect until 2009."
