Recycle Yell Langlands Primary
Langlands Primary School have been setting a green example by going yellow.
The school's pupils have rung up a huge success with the collection of old yellow pages - and have received £1000 for their efforts.
In a campaign jointly launched by Angus Council and The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, people were encouraged to recycle their old books.
As part of the campaign, every school in Angus was provided with green sacks or small yellow wheelie bins bearing distinctive Yellow Pages recycling sticker, in which to collect their old directories.
To encourage schools to get recycling, The Directory Recycling Scheme offered a prize of £1000 to improve the school environment.
Langlands Primary School, who received their cheque at Bottomyre Farm where the shredded directories are being used as animal bedding, won the first prize for collecting the most yellow pages per pupil.
Sheena Welsh, Convener of Environmental and Consumer Protection, said: "Langlands Primary School have done a great job in collecting old yellow pages for recycling. This is a fun way of teaching children the importance of recycling, while rewarding them with funds to improve their school environment in a way they choose. This exercise has helped raise awareness of the three R's of recycling - reduce, reuse, recover - among young people. "
New Deal trainees from Angus Council’s training services division, along with representatives ACROP (Angus Community Recycling Opportunities Partnership) collected and shredded the Yellow Pages.
