Positive Response To Proposals For Brechin Partnership

Angus Council reports that a very positive response has been received to its proposals for establishing a multi-agency partnership for Brechin.

The idea of a formal partnership arrangement grew from the Brechin Community Planning Conference in 2000 when a local group formed to identify potential developments to regenerate Brechin city centre.

The outline proposals brought forward by the group included plans for a group of existing buildings, including the old jailhouse, bakehouse, Lar Daker's Store, the old Town House, and the cells to the rear of the old Town House.

Commenting on the proposals at the time council leader Rob Murray said they offered the potential to create 'a package of heritage products to enhance the economic potential of the city centre'. However it was also acknowledged that neither the council nor any other single agency could undertake a development of that scale alone.

Following further discussion with interested parties in September it was agreed that a draft partnership agreement would be distributed to a wide range of organisations in Brechin for comment along with a draft brief for a feasibility study for the regeneration of the town centre.

Council leader Rob Murray said the response to the partnership proposals had been very positive.

"The vast majority of the responses received have indicated support for the setting up of a multi-agency partnership. The proposals also have the cross party support of local councillors, who are very keen to see a City Centre Partnership of this kind set up.

"We want to build on this positive feedback and officers of the council will be working with local groups in the coming weeks to establish a formal partnership which properly represents the views and interests of the community."
