Foreign Language Students In Angus
FIFTEEN foreign language students have travelled to Angus to spend a year in local schools.
Angus Council has employed 15 foreign language assistants every year since 1998 - a record which compares very favourably with other councils.
At an induction day in Arbroath, the assistants were welcomed to Angus by Jim Anderson, Director of Education, and given advice on effective teaching and how to adapt to living and working in Scotland.
Of the 15 assistants, eight French and five Germans will be based in secondary schools although occasionally they visit associated primary schools.
One French and one German language assistant will support the Council’s Modern Languages Coaching in Context programme while the Spanish assistant will be based at Monifieth High School.
Foreign language assistants provide schools with:
- opportunities for children to communicate with a native speaker
- contact with a young person from abroad
- first hand knowledge and understanding of other culture and traditions
Former language assistants have reported that their experience in Angus schools has been very enriching and many keep in contact and return on private visits.
