£2.5m Eastern Cairngorms Access Project
A £2.5m funding package is being pursued for the sensitive development of paths and access facilities in the Eastern Cairngorms.
The proposal is being put forward by a partnership comprising Aberdeenshire and Angus councils, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Upper Deeside Access Trust, Scottish Enterprise in Grampian and Tayside, and the Cairngorms Partnership.
The partnership is making a joint bid for Heritage Lottery Funding and European Regional Development funds to achieve a significant improvement to the access infrastructure in the Eastern Cairngorms.
If funding is secured, it is proposed that repairs and improvements to selected high level cross border routes like Jock's Road and Mount Keen, and other badly damaged mountain paths would be carried out. The proposals include creating new path links in the glens and around the towns including upgrading visitor facilities in selected car parks and picnic sites, waymarking paths and providing on-site interpretation.
Speaking on behalf of Angus Council, economic development vice-convener Joy Mowatt welcomed the proposals saying; "The council is happy to support this proposal as it has considerable potential to enhance the area's attraction as an outdoor activity holiday destination. It is obviously vital that any development is sensitive to the natural environment and with this in mind the partnership will be working with local residents, landowners and businesses to ensure that the developments are undertaken in a sensitive and beneficial manner."
The two area tourist boards will join the partnership in promoting the improved facilities to locals and visitors alike with the development of web site links, brochures and displays.
