Museum Going For A Song

Montrose Museum is hoping to repeat the success of last year’s groundbreaking Christmas carol concert.

With the help of Montrose Choral Society, museum staff have planned an evening full of popular carols and Christmas readings, supplemented by a welcome supply of hot mince pies, shortbread and mulled wine!

The carol concert takes place on Thursday 5 December, and many of the songs are given an introduction which provides additional historical interest.

Not many people know, for example, that the famous carol ‘O Come all ye faithful’ was written in 1743 by a fervent Jacobite, John Wade. Some people think the words represent a rallying cry to supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The songs are interspersed with a mixture of traditional and some less familiar Christmas readings.

Curator Nigel Dalziel said: “The concert is a nice mixture of mostly familiar songs and some really interesting reflections on the nature of Christmas. It’s a relaxed and informal event where people can also enjoy some excellent seasonal food and drink in friendly company. It’s in the best tradition of Christmas.”

Tickets, which cost £3.50, are on sale at the museum and at Montrose Library.

Children are also being catered for with Deck the Halls - a special activity day on Saturday 7 December.

Youngsters can develop their craft skills by making items such as greetings cards and decorations and lots more besides.

For ages between six and 12 years, youngsters can drop in any time between 10am and 4pm. The cost is £1 per child.
