Schools Consultation Report

A report outlining the results of a consultation exercise on the various options for improving schools in Forfar and Carnoustie, will be considered by Angus Council's education committee at its meeting on 13 November.

The report outlines feedback from the consultation which gave parents, pupils, staff and school communities in both towns an overview of the proposed project and the options for taking it forward.

As well as the distribution of an information leaflet and questionnaire, school boards were consulted, public meetings were arranged and a number of meetings were held with school-based staff in all the schools likely to be affected.

The committee will hear that feedback from Carnoustie indicates that three schools should cater for the burgh, two three-stream and one one-stream, with one of these being built on a new site in Thomas Street.

In Forfar, there appears to be an acceptance that the model of three two-stream schools for the burgh is the most appropriate one, but no absolutely clear consensus has emerged as to the most appropriate locations for the three schools.

Education Convener Jack Gibb said: "The consultation process revealed that parents recognised that these proposals provide an opportunity to improve the educational environment for future generations and to provide buildings and facilities which meet the challenges of the 21st century."

If the preferred option set out in the report is approved, the next stage will be to agree new school sites and draw up provisional delineated areas.

These detailed proposals would then need to be the subject of a formal consultation exercise before a final decision can be taken.
