European Year of People with Disabilities

Angus Council encouraged people to ‘Get On Board’ at a special event to celebrate the abilities and achievements of disabled people.

Organised as part of the European Year of People with Disabilities (EYPD) over thirty organisations were invited to the event at Angus College Conference Centre in Arbroath on the 3 and 4 December.

The event will be a mixture of information stands, workshops and demonstrations including videos, art, music and drama.

Opening the event Angus Provost Bill Middleton said: “Approximately 10% of the population are people who have a disability - that’s about 38 million people in Europe.

“People with disabilities are citizens with equal rights. They are active as politicians, workers, consumers and tax payers. Yet people with disabilities have told me of their frustration at being invisible wheelchair users who are ignored by people who talk to their escort or carer.

“This European Year of People with disabilities is our opportunity to educate the general public about ability. Everyone has different abilities and this event highlights the needs, abilities and achievements of people with disabilities.”
