Top Angus Design Revealed
The overall winner of the 2004 Angus Design Award is Logie Mill at Craigo.
Logie Mill joins the prestigious company of previous winners including Arbroath Abbey Visitors' Centre.
Receiving the award were architect Mark Walker of Logiealmond, Perthshire, along with main contractor James Bruce and Son, Brechin, and owners Mike and Melanie Cassidy.
The design of the extension to Logie Mill was recognised as an imaginative and creative solution to a potential flooding risk as the house is situated on the banks of the South Esk.
By adding a new top floor, with stunning views over the local countryside, the design is a practical way of dealing with a potential problem, while creating a fresh and contemporary look.
The presentation ceremony was hosted by Angus Provost Bill Middleton and Angus Development Control Convener Stewart McGlynn.
Runners-up were The Links Health Centre, Montrose; Forfar Day Care Centre; Springfield Medical Centre, Arbroath; while those buildings which received a commendation were The Stables, Gordon House, Hillside; Eskbank, North Esk Road, Edzell; and Kirkton Mill by Inverkeilor.
Congratulating all those who received awards, and thanking the judges for their input, Provost Middleton said: "This is the third time that Angus Council has promoted the Angus Design Awards, a scheme aimed at recognising, and rewarding, excellence in the field of architecture and design.
"The scheme continues to attract interest with a total of 21 entries submitted, including new health care facilities, new houses, extensions, a holiday complex, re-use of historic buildings and even a "sitooterie" in the grounds of an important listed building.
"The judging panel was independent of Angus Council and included one representative from the academic world, one from the field of architecture and one from the Angus community.
"The same team judged the last Angus Design Awards Scheme and they did an excellent job then. We are delighted that they have agreed to come back to perform their invaluable role once again."
This year's judges were Charles McKean, Professor of Scottish Architectural History at the University of Dundee, Andrew Nicoll, formerly a senior partner with Nicoll Russell Architects, and Graham McNicol, a member of the Society of Architectural Historians.
Councillor McGlynn said that he was pleased so many Angus clients were commissioning designers to create more than just functional buildings.
"Those who commission architecture have a crucial role to play in the design process. Without sympathetic clients, the creation of good architecture is an uphill battle. So we should thank those clients with the vision to be the architectural patrons of today," added Councillor McGlynn.
"The quality of the entries this time around seems to be even higher than in previous years. The quality of the individual buildings in Angus shows that we have moved forward and that is to be welcomed.
"The same mix of small house extensions, new housing and public buildings is evident, but what is also clear is that clients, designers and contractors are working together to maintain, and to increase, design quality in Angus."
