Three Latvian Tenors

Three soloists of the Latvian National Opera, tenors Guntars Rungis, Nauris Puntulis and Miervaldis Jencs are performing their only Scottish concert at Arbroath's Webster Theatre on Friday evening, 26 August 2005.

In the 80's the tenors studied together at the Latvian State Conservatory, and since the 90's have worked together at the Latvian National Opera.

But it was at the end of the 90's that the artists emerged as individual stars by forming the tenor trio and inviting the Latvian rock star and composer Juris Kulakovs to join them.

The composer has become the tenors concert maestro, with his song arrangements surprising audiences with their energetic richness and wit. The songs showcase the talents of each singer and the group have enjoyed success at home in Latvia, as well as abroad, touring America several times and performing in Moscow, Stockholm, Toronto, Vilnius and Tallinn.

The Latvian Tenors Scottish performance will feature a wide repertoire from sacred music; traditional and contemporary Latvian music and of course popular world melodies arranged by Juris Kulakovs.

Biographical information

After graduation from the Conservatory the three tenors perfected their vocal skills in various European countries, including a spell in Italy - the mecca for all singers.

They have individually performed in various opera theatres in neighbouring countries. As opera troupe members, the tenors have performed in many European countries, namely, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain, Sweden, as well as Taiwan. The tenors have played parts of traditional opera repertoires - Rungis has sung as Earl Almaviva in Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville', Puntulis has performed as Alfredo in Verdi's 'La Traviata' and Jencs has played the role of Don Jose in Bizet's 'Carmen'. In addition to playing parts of traditional opera repertoires, the artists have created vivid characters in both the classical and modern operas by Latvian composers.

Tickets for the concert on 26 August are available from VisitScotland Arbroath 01241-872609 and online at www.ticketweb.co.uk and are priced at £10, £6 Concession.
