Food Safety Week Prizewinner Presentation
The winners of the recent Food Safety Week competition received their prizes at a presentation in Forfar today (10am, Monday 8 August 2005 Ravenswood, New Road, Forfar).
The competition, run by Angus Council in partnership with Scotmid Co-op, attracted considerable interest with over 150 entries from across the area submitted for the word search.
The council's Environmental & Leisure Services convener Joy Mowatt presented the prizes and said it was good to see so many people taking part.
"The importance of food safety is recognised by us all but sometimes we need to be reminded of the simple steps we should all be taking when preparing and storing food," said Councillor Mowatt. "Competitions like this are fun and an easy and effective way of getting the message across to a wide audience. I am pleased that so many people took part this year and would like to thank Scotmid for continuing to support the competition."
The theme of this year's Food Safety Week was 'Stop - Think - Wash'. The message was simple - keeping your hands clean is your first line of defence against harmful germs and effectively washing your hands can be a life saving activity when it comes to preparing food.
When should you wash your hands?
- Before touching and eating food
- After handling raw foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, fruit and veg and before touching any other food or kitchen utensils
- After touching or emptying rubbish bins
- After going to the toilet or changing nappies
- After playing with pets and smoking
- After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
How should I wash my hands?
- Use soap and hot water
- Rub your hands together vigorously - remember both sides and the wrists
- Around the thumb, between every finger, the fingertips and around and under the nails
- Rinse with clean hot water, and
- Dry hands thoroughly with a clean dry towel, paper towel or under a hot air dryer
