Marquis Exhibition In Montrose
An exhibition at Montrose Museum focuses on the colourful career of James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose.
In the struggle between the king and the church during the reign of Charles I, James Graham was a central character and his glittering, tragic, yet supremely romantic life comes under the spotlight at the museum.
He was one of the first to sign the National Covenant designed to limit the king's power in the Scottish Church, but later, when the struggle became dominated by politics, he became at devoted Royalist and Charles I's general in Scotland. He is remembered to this day as a true military genius.
Exhibits include the famous wedding portrait by Jameson, the romantic painting of Montrose by Honthorst, and photographs of letters, medals, weapons and other memorabilia associated with the Marquis which are held in public and private collections all over Britain.
The exhibition runs until 1 October, and admission is free.
