Festive Drinking Advice

With the festive season in full swing, Angus Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) has issued advice to ensure revellers stay safe while enjoying the celebrations.

A campaign featuring posters and newspaper adverts outlining how partygoers can protect themselves before, during and after a night out, has been launched.

DAAT is the community planning body for issues of drugs and alcohol in Angus and its membership includes Angus Council Social Work and Health, NHS Tayside, Angus Council Education Department, Tayside Police, the Procurator Fiscals Service, Angus CHP and the voluntary sector.

The campaign gives advice and tips on keeping safe during Christmas and New Year and all year round.

Robert Peat, Chair of Angus DAAT, said: "This is just one part of a wider campaign to change the way we drink and think about drinking in order to reduce the harm associated with alcohol in our society."

Chief Superintendant Bill Harkins added: "The festive season is a time for lots of parties and socialising but this advice on staying safe is valuable at any time of the year. We don't want to stop people having fun but want to encourage them to be healthy and safe."

The team also point out that Christmas can be a difficult time for people and some may turn to alcohol to cope, when in fact it can compound their problems. If you're feeling low, remember that you're not alone.

Talking about how you feel is a positive first step in getting help. Breathing Space (0800 83 85 87) is a free phoneline service for anyone who is feeling low or depressed, where they can speak to trained advisors in confidence.
