Montrose Beach Coastal Erosion - Public Safety Message

A SECTION of the dunes at Montrose beach has been assessed as being in a very unstable condition following a series of extremely high tide levels this autumn, the latest of which coincided with very high winds last week.

There is a high possibility of further movement of the dune face and the potential for a partial collapse of the dune.

Angus Council is erecting additional fencing and warning signs are now in place in the risk areas. People are asked to comply with these restrictions and to stay out of the dunes and away from the top and bottom edges of the dune faces.

A council spokesperson said: "As previously reported, government funding is only available for coastal protection schemes that demonstrate a favourable cost-benefit, that is to say the cost and value of the work measured against the value of the asset being protected. Unfortunately this rules out heavy engineering forms of defences for Montrose.

"The council is investigating a range of low cost/low technology measures, which might be installed to slow down the rate of coastal erosion at Montrose, however most are unproven in the very testing environment of Montrose Bay.

"In the short term the condition of the dunes will be monitored regularly and if necessary the face will be re-graded to improve their stability."
