Angus Set To Benefit From 2014 Commonwealth Games
Angus Council is working to ensure that the county benefits from the Commonwealth Games, set to be held in Glasgow from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
The full bore and clay pigeon shooting events at the Games will be held at the Ministry of Defence range at Barry Buddon, Carnoustie.
A committee comprising elected members and officers and representatives from Tayside Police and the Volunteer Centre, Angus met for the first time this week. The group will look at local issues for Angus, including identifying opportunities to attract teams or squads to train and compete in the local area.
The committee will also help identify and recruit volunteers with an interest in sporting opportunities, as well as looking at 'legacy opportunities' for Angus in the wake of both the London Olympics in 2012 and the Commonwealth Games two years later.
Chairing the group is Councillor Colin Brown, vice-convener of neighbourhood services who said:
"We will work to ensure that Angus both contributes fully to and maximises the benefit from the Games.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Angus and we are determined to do all that we can to ensure that the benefits to Angus, to its people and its sporting infrastructure are long-lasting and permanent."
