Work Of James Barclay Featured In New Exhibition

The latest exhibition at The Meffan features the work of local artist James Barclay.

Originally from Forfar, James now lives and works in Fife and cites his new studio, which overlooks the North Sea, as a major influence on his recent work.

The paintings in the exhibition show a variety of styles, but are all based on the landscape. James is keen to point out that although there may appear to be a wide gulf between the 'on-the-spot' landscape drawings and the more considered geometric paintings, for him the gulf does not exist, as almost all these structured compositions have their roots somewhere in the landscape observations and experiences.

"I have always enjoyed the process of drawing from direct observation. Recording something of the bold forms, drama, light and rhythms of a selected view is always rewarding. Light has become an increasingly important element in my later works. In the studio I move towards more order and clarity, recollecting images seen, and recalling rhythms, light, and moods"

He explains this development of ideas in the words of Wordsworth, who described the process of creativity as; 'emotion recollected in tranquillity'.

James studied drawing and painting at Dundee College of Art and first exhibited at The Meffan in 1953 whilst still a student, although his work has featured more recently in the gallery's summer exhibitions. He spent his teaching career in Fife, retiring in 1987 to concentrate on his painting. He was awarded professional membership of the Society of Scottish Artists in the 1960's and has kept up his Forfar connection by being part of the well-known group of North East artists known as 'The Artist's Lunch'. He is delighted to be returning to his home town with his new exhibition.

The new exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 4 July.

The Meffan is open Monday - Saturday, 10.00am - 5.00pm, admission free.
