Angus Residents Reminded of New Year Winter Service

As cold weather continues to bite in Angus, local people are being reminded of the winter maintenance service for roads and footways which will be in place over the New Year period.

The council has responsibility for the maintenance of over 1100 miles of road and associated footways and in an average year spends around £2million dealing with winter weather conditions.

The council's winter maintenance service covers priority, auxiliary and non-priority carriageways, and priority and non-priority footways.

The priority carriageways and footways, are generally the busiest routes, auxiliary routes cover roads which are at a higher altitude than the rest of the network and are more prone to icing, but have lighter traffic than priority routes. Non priority routes are only gritted after priority routes have been satisfactorily treated. During prolonged snow conditions, priority and auxiliary routes are cleared before non-priority routes.

On the New Year public holidays of 1 and 4 January priority routes will be treated between 5am and 11pm; while auxiliary glens routes north of the A926/B957/A90 and C52 will be treated from 5am to 8am. Footways and non-priority routes and other auxiliary routes will not be treated on the public holidays.

On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January, the normal weekend service will be in operation, with priority routes treated between 5am and 11pm and auxiliary glens routes from 5am to 8am. Priority footways will be treated on Saturday from 6am to 6pm and on Sunday from 8am to 6pm. Non priority routes are not be covered over the weekend.

From Tuesday 5 January, the normal weekday service will resume with priority routes being covered from 5am to 11pm; auxiliary routes covered from 6am to 4pm; priority footways from 6am to 6pm and non priority carriageways and footways from 7.30am to 4pm.

Angus Council has also moved to assure residents that there are currently adequate salt stocks in the county to undertake the winter maintenance programme, however the situation will continue to be monitored in line with weather forecasts.

The A90 trunk road is maintained by BEAR Scotland Ltd on behalf of the Scottish Government. BEAR also maintains the A92 between Dundee and Arbroath on behalf of Angus Council and Dundee City Council. Both routes receive 24 hour coverage.

Unadopted roads and footways are the responsibility of individual owners.
