Angus Healthy Happy Communities Project launches in Arbroath

A free two-day event (Saturday 6 March and Monday 8 March) in Arbroath sees the launch of Angus Healthy Happy Communities Project and celebrates International Women's Day in the town.

Angus Healthy Happy Communities Project is a partnership between NHS Tayside and Angus Council which focuses on the importance of nutrition and encourages people to adopt a healthy diet.

Held over two days on Saturday 6 March and Monday 8 March, the launch of the project also marks International Women's Day which first took place in 1911 and recognises women's participation and equal rights on a global basis.

Internationally-renowned singer/songwriter Sheena Wellington will officially open the event at 12.30pm on Saturday 6 March in The CAFÉ Project in Arbroath. The musical theme will continue throughout the afternoon with a mix of international music and singing from Sheena as well as Bohemian Connections.

Over the two days, members of the public will be able to have the opportunity to sample a wide range of international and local dishes including Arbroath's world-renowned delicacy, the Arbroath Smokie.

Free health promotion materials including healthy eating tips will also be available with project staff and volunteers from NHS Tayside and local voluntary agencies on hand offering information and advice.

Activities continue at The CAFÉ Project Arbroath on Monday 8 March from 11am until 2pm, with a selection of complementary therapies being offered to parents and carers. There will be free crèche facilities on site during this period.

Project Manager Shona Burge is based within Angus Community Health Partnership Health Improvement Team. Shona organised the two events with the support from volunteer worker Daria Guzy from the Volunteer Centre Angus.

Shona said, "The launch of the Healthy Happy Communities Project across Angus is aimed at encouraging a desire for local people in Angus to become more involved in community activity and become a volunteer with the project.

"The two days offer wonderful chances for the community to experience and share the culture and cuisine of different nations whilst celebrating women, families and local communities on such a globally important day.

"We're thrilled that Sheena Wellington, who famously sang at the opening ceremony of the new Scottish Parliament in 2004, will open our event at 12.30pm on Saturday 6 March at The CAFÉ Project here in Arbroath.

"What better day than International Women's Day to choose to celebrate the opportunity for all parents and carers to become involved in a new Angus-wide project that will empower the community, enabling them to bring about positive changes that will improve their own and their children's health.

"Whilst women now have opportunities that didn't exist 100 years ago, there's still a long way to go for many women in many countries - we want to support International Women's Day whilst celebrating diversity locally.

"We do hope that lots of women come along and support the events - and men are very welcome too, as are young people and children of all ages."
