Trading Standards

This is the service provided by Local Authorities to enforce trading legislation and give advice to consumers and traders. This service is also known as Consumer Protection.

It covers consumer advice, business advice and the enforcement of the law in relation to consumer safety, pricing, weights and measures, credit and many other areas of law that impact on people's daily lives as consumers.

What services do Trading Standards offer to the Trade?

Free confidential business advice to allow compliance with the law is available, this advice covers all areas of consumer protection law.

Traders also complain to the service about the illegal activities of suppliers and competitors.

Trading Standards Law also protects traders in some but not all areas of business activities.

Leaflets and booklets are available upon request from the address below.

Trading Standards operates the Angus Reputable Trader Scheme (ARTS) to promote legitimate business.

What services are offered to the consumer?

Can I complain anonymously?

Yes. However, this may prevent full investigation and prosecution of rogue traders, as the council would be unable to contact you for additional information if necessary.
