What is an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?
It is a weekly payment of up to £30, paid directly to young people from low income families who stay on at school.
Does every young person staying on at school after 16 get one?
Their date of birth must be between 01.03.1991 and 30.09.1994 for an award to commence in August 2010, and between 01.10.1994 and 28.02.1995 for an award to start in January 2011.
How much is an Education Maintenance Allowance?
Academic Year 2009-2010
Current Students who have received EMA prior to 2009/10 Household income:
- for income up to £22,403 - £30 per week
- for income £22,404 - £27,465 - £20 per week
- for income £27,466 - £33,156 - £10 per week
- for income over £33,156 - £0
Applicants Qualifying for the first time since 2009/10
Household Income:
- for income up to £22,403 (with more than 1 child in full time education) £30 per week
- for income up to £20,251 (single child in full time education) £30 per week
- Families with income over the above categories £0
How is it paid?
It is paid every two weeks in arrears to students who are required to have a bank account which accepts BACS payments.
Will it affect any other benefits which I receive?
No.
Is there a closing date for applications?
The cut-off date for processing application forms for academic year 2010/11 is 31 March 2011. No applications will be processed after this date.
Forms should be received by 30 June to ensure it is processed in time for the start of the school session in August.
