Frequently Asked Questions

Household Bins

The household waste collection service provided in Angus is based on a wheeled bin system, with containers collected from the kerbside. More than 80% of Angus householders have access to the Kerbside Recycling Service where households have a grey bin for residual waste and a green bin for compostable waste, emptied on alternate weeks. A green recycling box for recyclable items is emptied weekly.

5000 households in discrete areas of Arbroath and Carnoustie and some rural areas such as Wellbank, Monikie, Kellas and Ballumbie, are making use of the Trial Kerbside Recycling Service. This service includes a purple bin for general waste, a grey bin for recycling, a green bin for compostable waste, and a brown caddy for food waste.

Where kerbside recycling services are not in operation the grey general waste bin will be emptied weekly.

To help Angus residents recycle as much household waste as possible each town in Angus has a staffed recycling centre. There are also over 50 neighbourhood recycling points throughout Angus at supermarkets, villages and rural locations, to give as many people as possible the opportunity to recycle.

For bulky household items which are too large for the wheeled bin, a special uplift service is provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are my bin and kerbside recycling bins and box collection dates?

Enter your postcode or part of your address below to see a map and your collection details.

When should I put my bin out for collection?

Your bin should be out for collection by 7am even if your collection time is usually later, in case we have to make any unexpected changes to the round. During the festive holidays it is especially important to have your bin out for 7am as there will often be round changes at this time.

Please put your bin at the kerbside with the handles facing towards the road.

My bin wasn't emptied or wasn't emptied properly. Who do I report it to?

Please contact the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office giving full details.

Can I put bags of waste out for collection beside my bin?

No. It is council policy that all waste must be contained within your bin. This means that we cannot take bags of waste placed either beside or on top of your bin ("side waste"). Side waste is not accepted in order to prevent litter and vermin scavenging, for the health and safety of our collection crew, and to encourage waste minimisation.

Can I put whatever I want into my grey general waste bin?

No. You may put general household waste into your grey bin, but NOT items such as masonry or bricks, car batteries or corrosive chemicals or large items such as ironing boards that will stick out the top of your bin; some of these items can be disposed of at your local recycling centre. Any recyclable items that are collected at the kerbside should go in your green box or recycling bin, and should not be placed in your general waste bin.

Please dispose of electrical items such as microwaves and toasters at your local recycling centre. For additional information contact the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office.

My bin was due to be emptied on a public holiday. When will it be done?

If your bin day falls on a public holiday your bin will be emptied that day as usual, except over Christmas & New Year when handbills will be issued explaining any changes.

I have difficulty moving my bin to the kerb. Can I have help?

Help may be offered where there are no household members who are capable of bringing the bin to the kerbside. To be eligible for this service the householder must be over 80 years of age or under 80 and have a medical condition.

Please contact the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office giving full details.

I'm moving into a newly built house. How do I get a bin?

Contact the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office one week before the bin is required giving your full name and address, plot number and telephone number. A new bin will be delivered free of charge as soon as possible, but not until the property is occupied.

My bin has been stolen. Can I get another?

Contact the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office giving full details.

My bin has been damaged. Can I get a new one?

Bins will be replaced free of charge where the damage is caused as a result of our collection service; the householder may be responsible for other damage. Contact ACCESSLine 08452 777 778 or your local ACCESS office.

I don't like my bin. Can I have another?

Angus Council will not replace a bin unless there is a good reason. If a householder wants to replace a bin because they feel it is grubby (though still structurally sound), they may purchase a replacement bin for £36.02, and we will take their old bin away.

How much does it cost to buy a replacement bin?

The cost for a replacement grey or green bin delivered to your door is £36.02 (inclusive of VAT). However, if you are able to pick it up yourself from Arbroath, Forfar or Montrose recycling centre, the cost would be £26.40 (inc. VAT). Bins can be paid for at ACCESS offices or via the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778.

Can I have two grey bins emptied?

A second grey bin will not be emptied from any household unless it has been issued by Angus Council in response to a particular need, i.e. those identified as having a "large family".

Authorised additional bins are easily identifiable by their purple lids, and are not available to buy.

Can I get a compost collection?

A green compost bin is offered where the Kerbside Recycling Service is operational. See also Home Composting A-Z page.

Can I have two green bins emptied?

If you have more compostable waste than will fit in one green bin you may purchase an additional bin for £36.02 (or £26.40 if picked up from Arbroath, Forfar or Montrose recycling centre). A second-hand bin may be available free of charge. Bins can be paid for/enquiries made at ACCESS offices or via the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778.
