What happens to the materials in the grey recycling bin?
All the recyclables collected as part of this trial will be stockpiled at our depot in Arbroath (ACROP), before being transported to a material recycling facility at Shotton, North Wales, for sorting. The paper and card is recycled on-site into new paper products. The metals, plastics and glass are sold to other re-processors and made into new products.
Why are some items not accepted in the grey recycling bin?
Materials that are contaminated with food, pet waste, paint or chemicals are not of sufficient quality for re-processing into new products. Plastic bags and plastic films may clog up the machinery involved in re-processing other recyclable materials. For other materials, such as rigid plastics, polystyrene, window glass and Pyrex, facilities that are able to recycle them economically are either not available locally or do not exist at all.
Can I get assistance with pulling my bin to the kerbside?
If there is no one living at your household physically capable of presenting your bin at the kerbside you may apply to have an assisted collection - contact the ACCESSLine on 08452 777 778.
Why do I need a recycling bin when I don't produce much waste?
Every little helps, it doesn't matter if you do not produce a lot of recyclable materials or food waste - you can simply put your bins out whenever they get full. Please note if you do not want to participate in the new recycling services your purple general waste bin will still be collected every two weeks.
