Trial Kerbside Recycling Service - Green Garden Waste Bin

From mid-September Angus Council began a trial with 5,200 households in Arbroath, Carnoustie and selected rural areas to test a new recycling service that will enable households taking part to recycle more materials as easily as possible, so that we meet our recycling targets, comply with new legislation and save money on disposal costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can be recycled in the green garden waste bin?

Green bin

If you already have a green bin it will continue to be collected every fortnight on your usual collection day. Please continue to use it to collect your garden waste for composting.

Please put the following garden waste materials for recycling in your green bin:

Yes please:

  • Flowers and plants
  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge clippings
  • Leaves
  • Sawdust and wood shavings
  • Shrub prunings
  • Small amounts of shredded paper
  • Twigs and small branches
  • Weeds (not invasive plants like Japanese knotweed)

No thanks:

  • Plastic bags or liners
  • Soil, turf or rubble
  • Plant pots or polystyrene
  • Any food waste
  • Animal faeces
  • Large branches or garden furniture
  • General waste
  • Broken garden ornaments

What happens to the garden waste collected?

The garden waste is taken to Angus Council's composting facility at Restenneth, Forfar where it is turned into high quality compost. The compost is used for land restoration at the landfill site and is of a good enough standard to be used for agricultural and horticultural purposes.

Why can't I just put food waste in my green bin?

To comply with the British Standards Institution's PAS100 quality standard, which ensures that a consistent, high quality compost is produced, the council cannot accept kitchen waste in the garden waste bin.

Food waste can now be processed to generate energy and fertiliser, therefore recovering more of the inherent value in this material.

Please see the food waste trial page for information about the trial food waste service.

Can I have two green bins emptied?

If you have more compostable waste than will fit in one green bin you may purchase an additional bin for £36.02 (or £26.40 if picked up from the Arbroath, Forfar or Montrose recycling centres). A second-hand bin may be available free of charge. Bins can be paid for/enquiries made at ACCESS offices or via the ACCESSLine 08452 777 778.

You may also want to consider composting at home. Visit the Home Composting A-Z page for more details.
