Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child entitled to free school transport?

In Angus all primary pupils who attend their catchment school, and who live at least two miles from school, will be entitled. All secondary pupils who attend their catchment school, and who live at least three miles from school, will be entitled.

Free transport can also be provided on safety grounds if the normal walking route fails to meet certain safety criteria. If you feel that this is the case you should contact the Education Department to have the route assessed.

What if my child has additional support needs?

Appropriate transport will be arranged for pupils who have additional support needs and are not able to walk to the school they have been placed in.

Transport may also be granted on medical grounds in certain cases.

What if my child is not entitled to free school transport?

If you live within the statutory walking distance (in Angus this is 2 miles - primary, 3 miles - secondary) or your child attends school as the result of a placing request, then you will not be entitled to free transport for your child.

If you live on or near a school contract route your child may be allocated a spare seat as a concession. You will not be charged for this seat. Concessions must apply for their space each year, before the end of session. Seats are not guaranteed and may be withdrawn at any time if required for an entitled pupil.

If the bus in your area is registered as a local bus service then your child may travel on the bus and pay a fare to the driver. Information on fares can be obtained from the bus company.

When should I apply for school transport?

For entitled pupils entering P1 the initial application will be valid up to P7. You will only need to re-apply if your circumstances change eg. you change address.

Entitled pupils at secondary school will have to apply for transport in S1, S5 and S6 unless circumstances change. S5 and S6 pupils are advised to apply for transport even though they are unsure if they will return to school.

Applications for concession places should be submitted each year, before the end of session.

Applications for P1 and S1 should be submitted by 14 February in any year.

Applications for S5, S6 and concessions should be submitted by 14 June in any year, otherwise seats may not be available at the start of the new session in August.

How can I find out if the school transport is operating in adverse weather conditions?

Telephone the transport operator for details or listen to Radio Tay (102.8/96.4 MHz FM or 1161/1584 kHz AM).
