Secondary School - General Information
Children commence secondary school on completion of their primary education and receive four to six years of secondary education depending on the type of courses they undertake.
Secondary schools provide a range of subject options leading to award bearing courses including Standard Grade and National Qualifications. As well as Higher and Advanced Higher levels, National Qualifications include Access 3, Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2.
All secondary schools cover stages S1-S6.
School hours are between 8.45 am and 3.45 pm but there are minor local variations depending on the structure of the timetable and on the length of breaks allowed for lunch and intervals.

What courses are available for my child at secondary school?
There are some slight variations between secondary schools on the courses they provide.
By the end of the 2nd year your child will have the opportunity to choose subjects they want to take further or move on to new subjects. Some core subjects such as English must remain on pupil timetables.
