The Calcutta Cup Visits Angus
The famous Calcutta Cup made a three day tour of Angus last week visiting the secondary schools in the county. The cup which is 130 years old is played for on an annual basis between Scotland and England rugby union teams. Scotland defeated the English 15 points to 9 at Murrayfield earlier this year in a closely fought encounter to win the famous trophy.
The Scottish Rugby Union and Angus Council utilised their limited time with the trophy to try and generate interest and increase pupils playing the game by visiting schools and allowing pupils to have their photo taken with the trophy as well as being given a brief history of the trophy by new Angus Development Officer (Rugby), Stewart Ross.
The trophy was created in Calcutta, India using 60 silver rupees and was presented to the RFU in 1878. Since 1879, there have been 115 Calcutta Cup matches played between the two nations - Scotland having won 29 times to England's 62 with 14 drawn matches.
The trophy visited Monifieth High School, Carnoustie High School, Montrose Academy, Brechin High School, Webster's High School and Forfar Academy. The trophy also dropped in at the after-school rugby club at Arbroath High School and was at Strathmore Rugby Club for their junior coaching session and the recent Angus Rugby Development Group meeting so that rugby club members could have the opportunity to view the famous trophy close up.
