The Scottish local government elections will be held on Thursday 5 May 2022.

“Becoming a Councillor” Briefing for Potential Candidates

A briefing for potential candidates is to be held on Wednesday 9 March 2022 @ 6pm via Microsoft Teams. 

The session will explore what is to be a local councillor in Angus and will give prospective candidates an overview of the Council and its services. If you are thinking of standing for election in Angus, you are very welcome to attend. Please register your interest in attending by emailing elections@angus.gov.uk and an invitation to the meeting will be forwarded to you.

The Improvement Service has created a website for prospective candidates which provides a wealth of information about the role of a councillor, including what councillors do and what’s expected of a councillor. There are also videos and short stories of councillors from across Scotland detailing why they became a councillor, the difference they make and their advice if you are thinking of standing.

Access to Elected Office Fund 

Inclusion Scotland run an Access to Elected Office fund that provides financial assistance to disabled candidates standing for election to help with the extra costs they may incur as a result of their disability. For more information about applying for funding visit the Inclusion Scotland website.

If you wish to stand for election as a candidate in Angus you can download a nomination pack and guidance notes below:

Alternatively, you can contact the Election Office elections@angus.gov.uk to request a pack to be sent to you. 

The Notice of Election will be published on Monday 14 March 2022. Nominations will be accepted by the Returning Officer between 10am and 4pm on any working day from Tuesday 15 March 2022.  Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, candidates are asked to contact the Election Office to make an appointment for the delivery of nomination papers and further information about submitting nomination papers can be found in the Returning Officer’s local guidance notes.

The deadline for submission of nomination papers is 4pm on Wednesday 30 March 2022.

The Returning Officer will hold a meeting with candidates and agents after the close of nominations on Wednesday 6 April 2022 @ 6.00pm to discuss the local arrangements for holding the poll. This meeting will be held in The Theatre, Forfar Community Campus.
